Nameless Knot

The "Nameless Knot" was shown to me by Sean Clarke, Manager of Farlows, Pall Mall, London.

It is an ideal knot to join two pieces of dissimilar diameter mono or wire trace. It is perfect for making up leaders with mono or knottable braided wire shock leaders. Once learned it is easy to tie when in the field. This knot has never failed me.

1. Take the large diameter line in your left hand and make a double overhand knot. Slowly tighten until a figure of 8 appears as shown. Leave a long tag end.

2. Feed the end of the smaller diameter up into the to of the figure of 8 and down into the bottom of the figure of 8. Leave a long tag end.

3. Holding both standing lines and tag ends, draw the figure of 8 snug. Keep the two lines parallel while doing this. Do not over-tighten. The small diameter line must be able to move freely through the figure of 8 knot.

4. Simply tie a 4 or 5 turn Grinner knot with the smaller diameter line around the larger diameter line. Snug up the Grinner and draw the finished grinner to the figure of 8 knot. Tighten both knots.

5. If using large diameter mono for the large diameter line, take the tag end with pliers and tighten the knot as much as you dare. See the small gap appear as in the photo.

6. Finally draw the Grinner knot up one final time, tighten all round then trim off the tag ends. This knot, once learnt, is invaluable. I use it in all my leaders and it has NEVER failed.
